What’s the Harm if You Wait to Get Gas?

Your European car relies on fuel in order to keep the engine running. But if you’re in the habit of letting that fuel run low, that can be a problem. Jackson Auto Repair has some information for you about why that’s the case.

You Can Cause Damage in the Fuel System

It’s very possible to do quite a bit of damage in your car’s fuel system if you drive low on fuel on a consistent basis. For starters, there’s the fuel pump and the fuel filter to worry about. Both are working harder than they’re designed to work when fuel levels are low. There’s a lot more sediment in the gas that’s coming up through the fuel pump, and there’s less fuel keeping the fuel pump running as cool as it needs to run. By the time the fuel gets to the fuel injectors, it can be full of debris that clogs the injectors.

Or in the Engine

Another big problem is that the engine itself can become damaged if you’re not getting gas as often as you should. When the fuel system is struggling to get the right amount of gas to the engine, that can cause misfiring and sputtering. All of that in turn leads to damage that really takes a toll on the engine. Over time, that damage becomes a lot bigger and can result in big problems, even engine failure.

Mileage Estimates Aren’t Accurate

Mileage calculations aren’t as written in stone as they seem. There are a lot of variables that you’re not able to factor in and if your car is advanced enough to calculate and display an estimate of how far you can drive with the fuel left in the tank, you have to remember that number is subject to change. There’s no way for anyone to guarantee exactly how far you’ll be able to drive, so pushing the limits is not a great idea.

You and Your Passengers Might End up Stranded

It’s one thing to take chances with your car and the parts that make up your car. But it’s another entirely to risk possibly getting stranded, whether that means it’s just you affected or passengers. Part of keeping yourself and the people who rely on you safe means making sure you can keep the car running until you get to your destination.
