What’s Wrong With My European Car’s AC?

The first day of summer is right around the corner, and temperatures are already climbing. The last thing you want is for your car’s AC to stop working during the sweltering heat of summer. If your air conditioner is already showing signs of failing, now is the time to diagnose the issue and schedule any necessary repairs.

AC Blowing Warm Air

You’ve turned the temperature in your car all the way down, but your face is just being blasted with warm air. One of the most common causes of this issue is a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant is a liquid that cycles through your car’s air conditioning system, absorbing and then releasing the heat. Without proper levels of refrigerant, none of the AC system will function properly. A leak could occur anywhere from a cracked hose to a worn-out seal on the condenser.

Another common issue that could cause your AC to blow warm air is a worn-out compressor. The compressor is responsible for pumping refrigerant throughout the air conditioning system. You might also begin to hear squealing or grinding noises if your compressor is beginning to fail.

AC Not Blowing At All

Maybe your fan isn’t blowing any air at all, or maybe it will blow at some speeds but not others. That’s a sign that your blower motor may be damaged, or perhaps a fuse for the motor has blown. The blower motor is responsible for pushing the air through your AC system and out the cabin’s vents. Other signs of blower motor issues are strange whirring noises or even smoke coming from the vents.

Another potential cause for decreased airflow is that your cabin air filter could be clogged. You may also notice strange smells in the AC from the pollutants stuck in your filter. To avoid clogging, you should replace your cabin air filters around every 30,000 miles, depending on driving conditions.
